Origin & Story

East of Kailash came into being in the 1970s, when the Delhi Development Authority laid out a new colony on agricultural land belonging to the old revenue village of Bahpur. It was part of a much larger act of planned urban expansion. Delhi was growing outward, and new residential districts were being carved across South Delhi to absorb a population that the old city could no longer hold.

The name is really a description of location. The colony sits directly east of Kailash Colony and Greater Kailash, both of which had been established decades earlier, in the 1950s, and both named after the sacred Mount Kailash. Taking its name from where it stood rather than from anything aspirational, East of Kailash inherited a certain quiet prestige the moment the boundaries were drawn.

What followed was a swift transformation. What had been rural periphery quickly filled with DDA housing pockets, cooperative group housing societies and independent residences. The Blocks A to G that define the colony today emerged during these early years, and the neighbourhood settled into the balanced, self-contained character it is still known for.

The pace picked up sharply once the adjacent Nehru Place commercial district began to develop, and again with the arrival of the iconic ISKCON Temple, which became a landmark not just for this colony but for all of South Delhi. Proximity to the commercial and institutional activity around it is a large part of why the area became so sought after so quickly.

Today East of Kailash is a fully residential neighbourhood with its own Community Centre markets, a cinema hall, schools, hospitals and a nursing home, all within the colony. It sits in a rare position, close enough to Delhi's best commercial districts to be convenient, and self-contained enough that daily life barely needs to leave the neighbourhood.
